3 Valve Technology: What Is It & How Does It Work?

3 Valve Engine Technology

What is 3 Valve Engine Technology?

3 Valve Technology incorporates Two Inlets & One Exhaust Valves in the engine.

For – Increased air-fuel intake, More power, Reduced Weight.

How Does This Technology work?

The 3 valve technology incorporates a total of three valves, two each of the inlets and one exhaust valve in the engine. Thus, it is different and better than one valve for each inlet & exhaust valve used in the conventional engine design. The engine uses its valves just like humans use a nose. Thus, two inlet valves allow more area opening to suck the air-fuel mixture.

Earlier, manufacturers used two exhaust valves to create balance. However, it also increases the engine’s overall weight and thereby of the vehicle. So, engineers came up with the idea of eliminating one exhaust valve. Also, they reduced the size of the inlet valves in 3 valve technology. Thus, it reduced the weight of the engine and the vehicle. Besides, it increased the power to weight ratio and thereby the performance of the engine and vehicle.

Advantages:

Moreover, the two inlet valves in this technology design increase the air intake area. It allows more air-fuel mixture to get into the cylinder. Thus, it increases the amount of air than the conventional design. The manufacturers commonly use newer generation engines with the 3 Valves in bikes or scooters. So, by keeping two inlet valves, manufacturers are able to achieve higher performance from the vehicles.

Which Models Employ This Technology?

Furthermore, Vespa SXL 149 & VXL 150 both use a 3-valve engine. It is because the cylinder head with 3 valve engines would reduce its weight and increase its performance. Besides, it would increase the combustion area compared to a conventional two-valve design while eliminating one of the two unneeded exhaust valves.
