The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS: India's First Mid-Sized Diesel Hybrid Car
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest automaker launched the diesel-hybrid version of its Ciaz sedan – the Ciaz SHVS with a starting price of Rs. 8.23 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Maruti Ciaz SHVS is available in five trims viz. VDi, VDi (O), VDi+, ZDi and ZDi+. With 28.09 Km/L as claimed by Maruti, the Ciaz SHVS has become India’s most fuel efficient diesel car as of September 2015.
What is SHVS?
The letters SHVS stand for ‘Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki’. This system encompasses special features such as Engine Start/Stop, Torque-Assist, Brake Energy Regeneration and Gear Shift Indicator; which help in improving the fuel economy.
The core of the SHVS system consists of an Integrated Starter Generator and an advanced high capacity battery. The system prevents the energy from being lost while deceleration or braking and utilizes this energy to charge the battery. The starter-generator’s motor function improves fuel efficiency by supplementing the engine's power; according to Maruti Suzuki.
The Ciaz SHVS is equipped with a ‘Torque-Assist’ function. When the vehicle needs extra torque for acceleration such as while overtaking or climbing a slope; the energy stored in this battery provides the additional 'torque-boost' to the wheels. This 'torque-boost' does not consume any fuel, thereby reducing the fuel consumption significantly.
