Maruti Suzuki No. 1 Again, bags top 7 spots
The year 2019 had been one of the most challenging years so far. The last financial year proved to be the dimmest year of the Indian automobile industry, especially passenger cars. There were multiple issues such as the economic slowdown and changeover to BS-VI emission norms. This now has been intensified by the arrival of Coronavirus. Most OEMs had to change the plans to dispose of their outstanding BS-IV inventory and cut their financial losses. However, Maruti Suzuki emerged as the winner of India’s top 10 sold cars in 2019-20.
Furthermore, this year also saw the arrival of new competitors such as MG Motor and Kia Motors in the market. These players actually reversed the trend with strong volume growth and got top positions in their respective segments. In spite of consistent performances, neither of their models could make it to India’s top 10 sold cars in 2019-20 list. However, both carmakers commercially launched their vehicles only in the second quarter of 2019. While being the first to launch BS-VI vehicles, India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer Maruti Suzuki bagged the top seven positions.
Following are the total number of units sold by manufactures of India’s top 10 sold cars in 2019-20:
|SL.||Name of Brand/Model||No. of Units|
|5||Maruti Wagon R||156724|
|7||Maruti Vitara Brezza||110641|
|8||Hyundai i20 Elite||104981|
|9||Hyundai i10 Grand||99592|
In India’s top 10 sold cars in the 2019-20 list, Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level hatchback Alto is at the top of the list with 190814 units. This is contrary to the predictions of many experts that the small-car segment is decreasing in volumes. To trap the first time buyers, the company also launched S-Presso in this segment.
Other brands in the top 10 sold cars in 2019-20:
The industry experts believe that with the Coronavirus crisis, there will be a lot of new car buyers in the market. This is because many people would want to avoid public transportation and ride-sharing cabs. So, there will be a good prospect for entry-level car sales to rise in the coming months. In the top 10 passenger cars in the 2019-20 list, on the other hand, Maruti Suzuki Swift sold only 1,87,916 units in FY20. It saw a huge decline of 16.08 percent compared to 2,23,924 units sold in FY2018-19. The premium hatchback Baleno and compact sedan Dzire received the 3rd and 4th rank respectively.
Because of the slowdown, only Wagon R and Eeco among the top 10 sold cars in the 2019-20 registered growth in the last year. The Eeco registered a strong growth of 27.50 percent at 1,17,003 units on account of discontinuation of its Omni van last year. So a lot of Omni buyers chose Eeco which is mainly used as school cabs and for goods movement largely. courier companies and delivery start-ups like Big basket and Grofers also use Eeco for their business. However, Wagon R registered a slim growth of 3.7 percent and sold 1,56,724 units.
At the bottom of the tree
The bottom three positions of India’s top 10 sold cars in the 2019-20 went to South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor with Elite i20, Grand i10, and Venue. Hyundai Venue is the only new car launched on this list. Popular brands such as Renault, Honda, Toyota and home-grown brands Tata & Mahindra could not even make it to India’s top 10 sold cars in the 2019-20 list.
